A guess is two options: place, guess, and switch between them

13 seconds · no audio · recorded on a real case board

Place a suspect, guess a second square for them, and the fork opens as two options. Claim a column under one, switch to the other and it is gone; switch back and it is there again.

Every hard case reaches a point where one suspect could be on either of two squares. Place them on the first, then hold their face and place them on the second: that is a guess, and it opens a fork. Option 1 holds them where they were, option 2 is the square you are wondering about, and both appear as chips above the board — that suspect's face, numbered 1 and 2.

Whatever you place or claim while standing in an option belongs to it. The clip claims a column for a second suspect under option 2, switches to option 1 — the claim leaves the board — places that suspect somewhere under option 1, switches back — the claim returns and the option-1 placement is gone — and back again. Nothing is lost on a switch; each option keeps its own world, and the committed board never moves.
